Mix ingredients. Stir. Simmer. Season to taste. Reduce. Garnish. Serve hot.
That’s how I like to describe the creative process, which I've used to cook up thousands of editorial cartoons ever since I drew my first as a sophomore in high school.
With that recipe, I became one of the top editorial cartoonists in the country. I'm one of the most widely syndicated cartoonists, with my work distributed internationally to nearly a thousand publications by Cagle Cartoons. My award-winning cartoons have appeared in such publications as USA Today, The New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, Newsweek, Time, and U.S. News & World Report, among others. I have been featured on CNN, MSNBC, and Fox News, where viewers of “The O’Reilly Factor” officially voted me a “Pinhead.”
My career has also included copy editing, design, and illustration.
I have designed magazine covers, drawn caricatures, and completed numerous freelance illustration projects.
One such project inspired a massive rebranding and marketing effort for my alma mater, American University in Washington, D.C. The WONK campaign originated from a sketch I drew for the AU magazine. As part of the campaign, I created dozens of WONK characters, comic strips, and other marketing materials.
As a designer, I helped redesign a newspaper three times while designing front pages and special sections daily.
I pursued a degree and career in journalism to learn how to write, edit, think analytically, and break down complex subjects into easily digestible nuggets. The daily news provided me with a continuing education about the world and the way people think and act, and my passion for challenges and problem-solving was rekindled every day. Newsrooms are wonderful factories of collaboration; that group interaction was always thrilling and helped elevate my own work.
Throughout my career there has been an enduring common thread: passion and creativity.
And the process – that aromatic alchemy of ingredients – continues.
